Why nokia needs/needed the iphone

Let me guess, what you really want to hear isn’t another nokia/iphone comparison and which one is better right? right. But i think that the iphone is probably the best thing to happen to the nseries in some time. Nokia was the king of high end devices for years and perhaps it needed something to come along and keep it going down the right path. Something to bring it’s ‘A’ game to. So Apple brings out their device, sells a ton of them, creates a loyal fan base, but what it boasts in sizzle, it lacks features. What we needed was them to take everything from the iphone that people love and everything from the nseries that people love, mash them together, and voila – you got yourself an n97. Thanks to the iphone’s release, comapanies like nokia are aided in knowing what people really want in a device. The ease of the iphone plus all the killer features and a fantastic camera that only nokia can bring to the table. That’s what i want.
It’s made companies strive for the iphone killer (really tired of that little chestnut of a saying – but it’s true), and it looks like nokia has, in my opinion, the only real contender (soon to be champion). My only fear, being in Canada, is that the affordable option for most people is a subsidized phone through a carrier to bring the price down. We have only seen the n95 8gb up here as far as nseries go, hopfully if the n97 is as good as it looks, companies like Rogers will offer them at the same $199 rate they did the iphone. It would be a shame if ones only option was for an $800 unlocked version, this would keep the phone out of a lot of peoples hands.

It seems like most forums are filled with iphone vs nokia talk, at least it always seems to get compared and then it just turns into comparative rants. i think that you couldn’t have one without the other at this point and that that isn’t a bad thing. The competition is giving us as consumers better and better devices each year as the companies battle it out.
Can’t we all just get along? At least until the n97 comes out and kills the iphone (that last part was in my head)
